‘Motorway speed limits ‘could be raised to 80mph’
Motorway speed limits could be raised to 80mph to shorten journey times and boost the economy, it is reported.
Half of cars already travel faster than 70mph on the motorway
By Will Taylor 24 Sep 2011
The current 70mph restriction is rarely enforced, police often turning a blind eye to anyone driving at up to 10mph faster than the limit.
Experts have argued that by having a higher speed limit that is enforced more readily, drivers are more likely to have respect for the rules.
A report in the Daily Mail suggests potential changes could be discussed as soon as this month’s Conservative Party conference.
It states that it is now only a matter of time before the change to the law is brought in, although speed restrictions on motorways will be better enforced.
But the Department for Transport refused to be drawn on the matter, describing the report as “speculation”.
“We need to make sure that we are looking at the right criteria when considering what level speed limits should be set at,” a DfT spokesman said.
“This means looking at the economic benefits of shorter journey times as well as considering other implications such as road safety and carbon emissions.
“Any proposal to change national speed limits would be subject to full public consultation.”
The latest figures from the DfT show that nearly half of cars exceeded the 70mph speed limit on motorways last year.
It is understood there are proposals from anti-car campaigners to keep the 70mph limit and to extend 20mph restrictions in some urban areas.
AA President Edmund King is in favour of raising the limit, and says that it would be safe to drive at such speeds.
“Our view is that 80mph in a modern car in good weather, at a proper distance from the car in front is a safe speed, whereas 50mph in bad weather tailgating the car in front is a very dangerous speed,” he said.
“Some might argue that 80mph is already the default speed, as motorists rarely get prosecuted for driving at 80mph on motorways.
“However, if we want people to adhere to the lower speed limits, such as 30mph, it is better to have speed limits that are realistic and enforced.”
Britain’s speed limits are lower than many other countries in Europe, with France and Italy both imposing a maximum of 81mph, while Germany has no restriction at all.
Any change is likely to see Britain take a similar stance to many European countries, where the 70mph limit is retained on dual-carriageways.’

Caught Speeding by a Pro-Laser? Visit: www.speedingsolicitor.co.uk
‘A MOTORIST’S speeding conviction has been quashed because a police officer operated a camera through a windscreen.’
‘Michael Bamford, 40, was convicted at Llandudno magistrates’ court last November of driving at 75mph in the 50mph stretch of the A55 at Colwyn Bay and fined £250 with £420 costs. He also received five penalty points…
…But the Widnes man appealed the conviction, which was overturned at Mold Crown Court yesterday, after it was revealed a police officer used the Pro Laser device through the windscreen of a patrol car – against ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) advice and the advice of the manufacturer.
Mr Bamford’s lawyer, Gareth Owen, of the specialist Speeding Solicitors firm, said the case could “open up the floodgates” for conviction appeals.’
‘Mr Bamford was dramatically cleared when the court upheld the appeal after the prosecution said it did not oppose it, and ordered that his legal costs be paid from central funds.
Leaving court, Mr Bamford said: “I would have thought this decision could have implications for others.”
North Wales Police were unable to say how many other cases could be affected by this judgement. But Superintendent Paul Breed said: “In the light of this case we will be reviewing our procedures to ensure all officers comply with ACPO guidelines and the manufacturer’s instructions.”
