‘BT adverts star Kris Marshall copped a driving ban yesterday after he was nicked while sleeping off a boozing session in his car.’
‘Cops found the 38-year-old actor dozing in his Jaguar in a Tesco car park just after midnight.’

‘He smelled of drink. And when cops spotted the Jag’s key in the ignition, Marshall was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in charge of a vehicle.’

‘Magistrates heard Marshall, who also starred in TV sitcom My Family and the film Love Actually, willingly gave a breath test at the scene, which was positive.’

‘But he was “aggrieved” by his arrest, believing he was being responsible by kipping in his car rather than trying to drive home.’

‘At a police station later he decided to avoid giving a proper blast of breath, failing to lock his lips properly around the test machine’s tube.’

‘That sealed his fate – and he was charged.’

‘Yesterday Marshall admitted failing to supply a specimen of breath. He got ten points on his licence, which earned him a six-month ban as he already had three points for speeding and another three pending for using a mobile in his car. But Geoff West, chairman of the bench at Yeovil, Somerset, told him: “We have some sympathy with you.”‘

‘Marshall, who later refused to comment, had a gin on a train journey from London to Castle Cary, Somerset. He picked up his Jag and drove to Wells — near the village home he shares with his plumber girlfriend. He parked at the Tesco and went to a bar for more drinks before returning to the car.’

‘Drink driving doesn’t necessarily mean a ban’ – By Martyn Collins, Oct 27, 2011

November 8th, 2011 by admin

Caught Drink Driving? Visit: www.speedingsolicitor.co.uk

‘With Christmas just around the corner, the usual clampdown on drink drivers will be big news. And while you might assume that an automatic driving ban is the default penalty, statistics from the Ministry of Justice suggest otherwise.’

‘Last year, 1,480 of the 55,539 motorists convicted of drink driving were not banned.’

‘According to the figures, given to LV Insurance by the Ministry of Justice, if you’re a driver brought before the courts in the City of London and Suffolk for drink driving, you’re three times more likely to escape a ban than those in Cumbria and Warwickshire.’

‘Robert Gifford, Executive Director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety, voiced his alarm at the findings. Quoted in the Telegraph, he said: “Drinking and driving is a serious offence and remains the biggest single killer on our roads.’

‘”It is important that we have consistent sentencing across the country and that the courts give this offence the significance it deserves. It is very worrying to think that some drivers are being let off lightly when they will place other road users at risk.”‘

‘This latest disclosure comes after the courts were condemned for allowing some drivers with 12 penalty points or more to carry on behind the wheel. This would normally lead to a ban.’ – By Martyn Collins, 27 October 2011

Facelift for A40 Victorian drink-drive warning pillar

November 1st, 2011 by admin

‘A 19th Century monument erected to warn Welsh stagecoach drivers of the danger of drink-driving is to get a facelift.’ BBC News

‘A 19th Century monument erected to warn Welsh stagecoach drivers of the danger of drink-driving is to get a facelift.

The Mail Coach Pillar built in 1841 marks the spot on what is now the A40 between Llandovery and Brecon where a mail coach plunged over a precipice.

According to the inscription, driver Edward Jenkins was drunk at the reins.

It aims to “caution mail coach drivers to keep from intoxication,” and has seen better days, but will be repaired for the first time in 80 years.

The inscription says the coach was travelling between Gloucester and Carmarthen on 19 December, 1835 when it plunged 121ft (about 38m) off the precipice.

The inscription says Mr Jenkins’s coach was travelling at “full gallop” on the wrong side of the road when it met a cart coming in the opposite direction.’
