Foreign speeders are believed to have escaped £3.6million in fines for speeding on Britain’s roads last year.

Every day almost £10,000 worth of fines and 500 penalty points that would be handed out if the cars were registered in the UK have to be abandoned because there is no effective way to track down foreign culprits.

A survey found that an estimated 60,000 speeding offences were written off last year, more than 160 a day.

Almost 5,000 were abandoned in North Wales, with the worst in London, where 7,666 tickets were written off, meaning around 20 drivers of foreign-registered cars escape punishment everyday.
