Cambridgeshire speed cameras – How many actually work?
Cambridgeshire Police force have admitted that just half of all speed cameras in Cambridgeshire work.
There are a total of 51 speed cameras in the county according to the road safety partnership. However, only 25 speed cameras are fully operational with the force admitting they rely on drivers not knowing which speed camers are working to slow down to the correct speed.
The information has been released following a freedom of information request regarding speed cameras in the Cambridgeshire area.
An information officer said: ‘As of July 6, 25 camera sites are fully operational. Whilst it is widely known that not all camera housing have an operational camera in them at any given time, their road safety effectiveness is not diminished because there is generally no way that a motorist can tell whether a camera housing contains an operational camera or not.
‘There are a number of reasons for variation in the number of cameras active at any one time, for example scheduled calibration or repair. The operational camera in service will be rotated around all the fixed speed camera housings, as such all fixed speed cameras listed are actively used.’
